I’m really hoping I can get myself to do more creative writing this year. I have a novel that I’m currently working on but it’s slow going and so I’ve had my eyes peeled for some writing exercises I could take part in to hopefully keep my mind sharp and my ideas flowing.
I have the wonderful Savannah @msliterary to thank for introducing me to #AtticNotebook. This is a writing exercise/challenge created by Laini Taylor, author of gems such as Strange the Dreamer and The Daughter of Smoke and Bone. Here’s how it works: find a notebook or journal to write in, spend 15 minutes (recommended) free writing with or without a prompt, and don’t look back at what you’ve written. Fill up the notebook/journal and set it aside for a full month. After that month you can go back and reread what you’ve written. You may find that there’s some very useful story ideas in there!
I thought this sounded really doable and fun. Today was the first day I participated and it was a blast! I only wrote a couple pages but I feel like it really loosened up my writing muscles and I felt inspired to work more on my WIP once I was finished. That’s a win in my book!
You can check out Laini Taylor’s original #atticnotebook post here. Does this sound like something you would try? Do you do any writing exercises? I’d love to hear about them in the comments!
