The Sunday Review 2/17/2019

The Sunday Review on a Tuesday? Totally still counts.

For the uninitiated, The Sunday Review is a weekly installment where I talk about all the bookish adventures I got up to during the past week. Feel free to jump in and participate, just tag me in your posts!

Books I finished:

I read two books this past week which brings my current 2019 total to 16 books!

  • Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

I read this book ages and ages ago and I LOVED it. I think Sam and Grace were one of my very first OTPs. I’ve been listening to audiobooks a little too fast on Scribd and so they’ve put most of the ones I’m most excited to get to on hold until 2/25, but Shiver was available!

I much preferred the narrator for Grace over the one for Sam but I think both did a great job overall. I’m a little disappointed to say that this reread didn’t go over as well as I thought it might. The story just didn’t connect with me as well. Maybe I’m a little too old for it now? I gave it 3 stars, down from a previous 4 star rating.

  • Bloom by Kevin Panetta

This was a really sweet graphic novel with cute, blue-toned illustrations. I enjoyed the LGBTQ romance between the main characters but the last third of the book took a strange and sudden turn that was played so seriously it was almost a little comical.

I gave Bloom 3 stars as well.

Books I’ve added to my TBR:

Books I’m reading now:

I haven’t been super motivated to read lately so by “reading” I mean like maybe getting through a chapter at a time.

I’m still working on finishing Throne of Glass in time for the 28th of February which is when my book club will be discussing it!

I dipped my toes into Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee because it sounded so interesting and I’m already devastated 15 pages in. The injustice that the Native Americans faced over the course of American history makes me sick and I can’t really take more than a few pages at a time. I fully intend to keep reading it of course, it just might take me a while.

I’m about 10% through Heir of Ra and I’m enjoying it quite a bit! I’m taking my time with this one as well since I was sent a review copy and I want to be sure I’m thorough so that I can do it justice once I do get to writing the actual review.

Songs I’ve been listening to:

  • No Flex // Tiny Meat Gang
  • Voicemail // Poppy
  • Haruka Kanata // Asian Kung-Fu Generation
  • Without Me // Halsey
  • Plain Jane Remix // A$AP Ferg, Nicki Minaj

What I’ve been up to:

Not writing book reviews, that’s for sure! I’m thinking of revising my review resolution to make it a little more doable for myself. My goal has been to write 250 words about every book I read this year but that’s often a little more writing than I have time for. It gets really easy for things to pile up on me because I’m dreading having to write that much and my solution is to just write nothing at all. I think it might be more manageable to make the goal 100 words instead.

What are you reading? How are you doing on your resolutions so far this year? Let’s talk about it in the comments!
